Glossary & FAQ

What is intaglio printmaking?
Intaglio printmaking is a printing technique that involves incising or engraving an image onto a metal or plastic plate. The plate is then inked and wiped, and the ink is transferred onto paper through a printing press, creating an impression.
What is solar etching?
Solar etching is a form of intaglio printmaking that uses a light-sensitive emulsion to create the image on the plate. A hand-drawn image on a transparency film is then exposed onto the emulsion-coated plate using a UV light source, including the sun. The plate is then developed and etched, creating an image that can be printed.
What is an illuminated print?
An illuminated print is created by first painting a watercolor base, and then printing an intaglio plate over it. The resulting image has a unique and captivating luminosity that makes it stand out from traditional printmaking techniques.
What is Chine-Collé?

Chine-collé is a printmaking technique that involves attaching thin, delicate papers to a heavier printmaking paper during the printing process. The thin paper is placed on top of the inked plate, and the heavier paper is placed underneath. When the plate is run through the press, the pressure adheres the two papers together, creating a unique effect that can add color and texture to the final print.

What kind of paper do you use?
I use a variety of high-quality, acid-free papers for my prints, including Hahnemühle and Somerset Velvet, and Arches. I also use handmade paper like Garza.
You say you create for women, what about people who identify as women, gender non-conforming, and non-binary people?

My work is inclusive but predominantly celebrates the diversity of female sexuality and identity. While I may use language like ‘women’ in my artist statement or marketing materials, my intention is to create art that speaks to all people, regardless of gender identity or expression.

Why do you use a pseudonym?

Mistress Ess is an archetypal alter ego. Using a pseudonym allows me to explore and express different facets of myself as an artist in a safe way.
